Lucy Gordon is not for the faint of heart. Some HP/Harlequin go the easy route with manufactured angst, but LG creates nuanced characters and then rips your heart out. Joanne fell in love with Franco on a long trip to Italy and just as she hopes he might reciprocate her feelings, her doppelgnger cousin shows up, and it's soul-mate city for Franco and Rosemary. The cousin even has a better name. No, Rosemary isn't a devious, scheming evil OW, but the result is just the same. Joanne jumps into her career as an artist who copies originals. I didn't think much of this at first, but later it matters. The h stays away from the new family as she is afraid she'll reveal how she feels about Franco as he remains the love her life. Rosemary dies and it rips Franco up. Joanne is on a longterm job in Italy and drops in to see Franco and his son. Awkwardness ensues as people jump at the resemblance, Franco most of all. There are a couple of creepy clinches where he knowingly pretends she is Rosemary. Joanne is out of there. Seeing Joanne in a clinch with an Alpha-Romero bad boy wakens Franco up, and from here on out the potential for romance between the two becomes more than Joanne as a mere stand-in for Rosemary. I found it believable, but it takes the grossest of heroes for me to take off the rose colored glasses. The fun part is now that their love has been consummated, Joanne finds her own talent and vision in her art. Nice touch from LG mirroring the h's pale imitation artwork and her growth as an original artist to Franco's change in seeing her as a pale imitation of Rosemary to loving her for herself. Ah, but all is not happy in their little paradise. The evil, evil manipulative and controlling Italian mama shows up to throw some venom and poop on the party. Joanne flees, the idjit, but a presence beyond the grave makes true love all come together. LG is a pretty cool writer. She met and fell for her Italian husband on a trip to Venice so let's assume she knows what's she's talking about. I emailed her after having my heart torn out by Crown of Laurel, and was happily surprised that she emailed back almost immediately and corrected the spelling of the heroine's name.
