Review # 1 was written on 2020-08-11 00:00:00 Lauren Rheaume It begins with an info dump and ends with... well. Trigger warning for sexual assault. This book is a horror story that doesn't know it. Nothing else has made me more thankful for feminism in my life. "Blackie," as he is called is forceful and possessive the entire book. The second Jenny reveals her secret being a rich heiress with a party-loving past he 1. becomes angry, 2. refuses to listen to her explanation despite being in a similar situation, 3. brings up her past in deeply hurtful and cruel ways at a party with friends and finally tries to rape her because 'he should get to taste what so many other men have had' (paraphrase.) He only stops when she promises, terrified and in tears, that she's a virgin. (Note: later, he says he was upset only because he wanted to provide for herso, the money part, not the party-girl part. But that's not what he uses to hurt her when he's angry.) And in the end it's all forgiven. He promises never to hurt her again, but a man like that? Any time she hurts him, she can expect to be disrespected, trod over roughshod, and abused. Finally, this disgusting piece of fiction was published in 1991, for some perspective. I can only thank God that I was never raised to uphold this particular worldview. |
