Verona has come to Greece to act as companion and chaperone to her young friend (and lodger) Katina. Andreas, Katina's brother, is expecting an elderly lady, not the beautiful young woman that he meets at the airport. Sparks fly from the first instant, and only increase as the days go by and the two of them disagree on everything, most importantly the marriage that Andreas has arranged for his baby sister. Can the two of them ever stop fighting long enough to address the attraction that flows between them? I really should have reviewed this when I read it a few months ago, because it's not as clear in my head as it was. What I do remember is that I really despised Andreas for at least the first three quarters of the book. He was tyrannical, misogynistic and even cruel at times. Most of the time I couldn't understand why any woman would fall for him, let alone one as non-traditional (and as un-Greek) as Verona. And then there would be a scene where he acted like a rational, decent human being - and I'd suddenly see what Verona saw in him. It was all very confusing and I'm glad it was a short book. I probably should have rated it two stars, but I really loved the description of the island, and that pushed it up another half-star at least for me. Angela Wells can certainly write her locations well, if this book is anything to judge by - though I've never been to Crete, I've been elsewhere in Greece, and this story captured the beauty and wildness of the islands wonderfully. Despite not really enjoying the romance and the characterisation, I have another Wells story on my to-read list, simply because I want to see what she can do with Menorca, the island where I grew up. All in all, 2.5 stars, edging up to 3 because of the descriptions of culture and fauna and flora. But not one that I'd want to read again.
