Lesson learnt: if you find an AMAZING book by an author, try to stay content with that book. DO NOT go around trying to read every book the author wrote. Any disappointment you feel from this point forward, you have brought upon yourself. Long story short: Heroine's' stepbrother wants to marry hero's ward. He thinks he's a gold digger and holds the the fact that he had a criminal father against him. He ONLY decides to forget about the criminal father when he learns that the stepbrother is brought up by the hero's idol in financial world AND has a significant fortune waiting for him. Basically, if you're richer than me, circumstances of your birth no longer matter and that shallow thinking is supposed to attractive? He ONLY declares his love for heroine and proposes marriage AFTER knowing who her father was (a very respectable man therefore heroine deserved respect) and after knowing that she also has a fortune waiting for her do she really isn't after his money. How is that love? I don't know. Until he knew that, he tried to seduce her and after he failed from that point forward said things that no man with a single ounce of love and respect would utter. He basically called her a whore every time they met. And suddenly now that she's well off, she's epitome of virtue, and what he called guarding her virginity for the highest bidder was token of her shy love? Dude, you are so shallow, a puddle seems like an ocean compared to you.

4 Stars ~ . Suddenly orphaned, 22 yr old Eden and her 24 yr old step-brother, Thomas, decide to make a life in London. Both have substantial inheritances that will be theirs when they turn 25, which for Thomas will be in a few months. While Thomas looks for work, Eden looks for a home and they stay in a friend's shabby apartment while he's away travelling the world. Thomas is a reliable and gentle young man and quickly finds a position that he can build a future on. While his boss is away on an extended trip, Thomas falls head over heels in love with his 17 yr old ward, Camilla. Thomas proposes and Camilla accepts, the only hurdle now is her guardian. On his return, Sterne is far from pleased at the engagement and he sets detectives out to prove that Thomas is an opportunist. The first information Sterne learns is that Thomas' father died in prison; his crime conning the wealthy out of their money. Not waiting to learn more, Sterne paints Thomas with the same brush and forbids Camilla to have anything more to do with Thomas after he fires him. Camilla is furious, and the two love birds runaway so that they can sort out their future. Camilla is soon to be 18, and free from her guardian and when she marries, she'll have access to her full inheritance. Eden's first meeting with Sterne is when he comes thumping at the door of the shabby apartment. One look at the place, Sterne is even more convinced that Thomas is a crook and that Eden must be his mistress. Furious, Eden corrects him, telling Sterne that Thomas is her step-brother and that Thomas is soon to be very wealthy in his own right when he turns 25. Again, Sterne jumps to conclusions and assumes that the inheritance must be from ill-gotten gains. Beside herself with frustration and anger, Eden kicks Sterne out with a snide promise to call him if she hears from the runaways. Over the next days, Sterne hounds Eden, popping up at the apartment, calling her. When Thomas finally calls to say they are safe but need Eden to get them some cash, clothes and food, Eden promises to hurry. Only her conscience kicks in and she calls Sterne to relay that Camilla is safe, then hangs up. Eden's departure is stalled when she finds her car has a flat and of course, as she's trying to change it, Sterne comes along. He helps her fix it, doesn't buy for one second that all that luggage is hers for a trip to Wales, and when she leaves, he's close on her tail. Totally frustrated, Eden tries to lose him, and at one time thinks she has, only to find him behind her again. This begins their adventure of a hilarious cat and mouse chase that sees them sharing a dinner table as they both stay at the same hotel, coffee in the morning, and waves on the road. Eden finds herself falling for Sterne's charm and almost gives away Thomas' location. And just as she's about to give him the slip again, Sterne's at her side with terrible news, the runaways have been in an accident and both are in critical condition. I'm rarely disappointed with a story written by Jessica Steele and find the ones injected with her delightful sense of humour to be the most fun to read. Some of the hilarious moments as Eden leads Sterne on a tour of the English countryside made me laugh out loud. On the chase, they form a odd sort of friendship and gain a respect for each other. It's obvious that Sterne is coming to care very much for Eden, and he nearly loses her. He does a lovely grovel and of course, Eden finally lets him catch her.
