Heroine, a junior programmer ends up acting as a personal secretary for the big boss hero on a business trip to Japan. Heroine was looking forward to going with the blonde, sleezy OM, but ends up traveling with the tall, dark hero who wants to know if she was okay with sharing a bed on a business trip. Seems the OM arranged that little set up without the hs knowledge. Hero manages to get a suite so they dont have to share a bed. Hero goes on to kiss her, compliment her on her looks, asks her to unpack for him, calls her a tempting morsel more than once - and good lord, what a load of sexist drivel is this? I just readChristmas at the Tycoon's Command: A Manhattan Christmas Romance, where the author went overboard describing a business plan. This is just as bad in a different way. Lots of awe at the Japanese culture and business acumen, long descriptions of the flights between England and Japan so boring I felt like I was there! The heroine does some typing and wanders behind the men but our junior programmer was eye-candy and nothing more. If that is not depressing enough, there is a plot thread where the OM put seeds of doubt in the heroines mind about the heros business motivations. The hero is also suspicious of the heroine, but that doesnt keep him from invading her personal space at every turn. Heroine melts but honestly, it was creepy for example, the way he complimented her on the size of her waist and how his hands could span it. There is an earthquake the doesnt shake anything up. *sigh* They also attend a kabuki performance. Heroine is ready to go to bed with him after two days of acquaintance, but there is a family emergency with one of their co-workers (who turns out to be in cahoots with the OM). Heroine moons around in love with the hero on her last day in Japan at a robotics factory. (LOL) But the hero surprises her with a stay at a Japanese Inn and a peek at the cherry blossoms. They finally have sex on an exotic mattress called a futon. (LOL again) They exchange I love yous on the flight home, but the hero receives an envelope when they arrive in England and is cold to the heroine. For the black moment, the heros secretary shows up to tell the heroine hero was only interested in her as a diversion and to keep her from divulging company secrets/hacking who knows? It was all very vague. Two days later, hero shows up and convinces heroine it was true love and HEA. After some thought, I realize why I had such a hard time with this hero. The author was trying to make him charming and it came off manipulative and weird. I guess thats why the vintage alpha-holes are more tolerable. They are in the grip of strong emotions and show them by alpha-hole behavior (roofie kisses followed by slut-shaming followed by dancing with an OW). This guy just came on too strong - all the time. I have a print copy of this book and I must say that the heroine's eyes shadow game is on point. Same with that hair - omg. She must have packed her hot rollers. The only reason to read this story is for time capsule reasons (they marvel over the exotic macadamia nuts served on the plane for example).

I think this is one of my favourite of the past harlequins. The plot, locale, intrigue and characters all added to make this read enjoyable.
