If I hadn't been spoiled by Violet Winspear, I would have been more likely to enjoy this very Winspear-like, full of gothicky goodness, story of a charismatic, autocratic, broody, possessive half-Italian, half-Australian landowner and the willowy, ethereal, virginal English Rose who trespasses on his domain like Beauty in The Beast's lair. The author even had one of those psycho, murderous OWs that Winspear is forever conjuring up with ever more creative assassination methods. Some of the OWs in HPlandia can give Bond villains a run for their money. Here, we have three murder attempts: 1) a poisonous spider hidden inside heroine's shawl, 2) a plant with sharp, poisonous darts placed under the heroine's horse saddle, and 3) of course, no good gothicky romance would be complete without the old tried and true method of locking heroine up in a creaky old tower in the dark. lol Sadly, the character of the hero was wildly inconsistent, though I have to give him bonus points for admitting very calmly to the heroine that 1) Yes, he DID sleep with the OW in the distant past but 2) He regrets it and never wants to repeat the experience. In a (De)Nile river saturated with HP heroes who drive their heroine bonkers by NEVER EVER admitting to a sexual relationship with the OW, while simultaneously engaging in every possible suggestive sexual behavior short of humping the OW right in the middle of the dining table while heroine meekly slurps from her soup tureen with a dead look in her eyes, this was so refreshing and unprecedented that I almost wanted to pin the hero with a medal. However, he ultimately disappointed me by inexplicably and abruptly switching from crazed, mine-mine-mine, won't-take-no-for-an-answer, feudal overlord to a suddenly beta, wishy-washy bore who breaks things off with the heroine in order to give her a real choice between becoming his wife or pursuing a glitzy Hollywood career. Now THAT would be something that Winspear's uber-Alpha beloved tyrants would have scoffed at.

It was a strange new world to Jane... It was also thrilling. As assistant to the scriptwriter, Jane accompanied the crew for a film about the McGoverns, an Australian pioneer family. There'd been scandals and tragedy in their family's past. Jane could feel undercurrents of bitterness and the unconcealed hostility of Alex McGovernthe most attractive, dynamic man she'd ever met. Strangest of all was Jane's feeling of belonging, as if she were reliving a part from her pasteven to the fiery, consuming love that swept her and Alex together!
