This volume of two of Greenes lesser (smaller) plays is an interesting display of the humorous (manic?) side of his writing personality. Even though he comes across as a Catholic, significantly depressed individual in many of his novels, we have to remember that he was a trickster while at Balliol. Yes and No has only one act and two character, one of whom is virtually monosyllabic. It seems to be written by Greene to illustrate his disdain for the directors of his staged plays, many of whom he pillaged. The play was first performed at Haymarket Studio Theatre in Leicester, England, in March, 1980. I cant imagine it had a very long run. For Whom the Bell Chimes (a little play on Hemingways opus?) is a 3-act play, a farce, comparable to the more recent Noises Off, with actors running in and out of the scene, much hilarity because of disguises and mistaken identities. There also seems to be a rather wonderful set: a very compact little apartment. You just press that button on the wall there. This play too was first performed at the Haymarket Studio Theater, in March, 20280, presumably together with Yes and No. According to Greenes biographer, Greene went to Leicester for ten days during rehearsals. In addition to the original limited printing of these two plays together (only 750 copies were printed and numbered, all signed by Greene), there was a separate printing of Yes and No a year later by Eurographica in Finland, which was limited to 362 copies and included a holograph facsimile of Greenes manuscript.

A wonderful 'adult picture book' of photos and story of Richard Attenborough's making of the massive movie about Mahatma Gandhi's life. Now I would like to read more about Gandhi and I would like to re-view the movie. Gandhi has always been a hero but I didn't realize how much of one. It's an older book so I am not sure it will be found places other than thrift shops, but if you come across it, pick it up!
