I remember this as one of the first books I read without reserve as a kid. I devoured it as fast as my eyeballs could scan the pages. I remember we were on a big family road trip. We stopped, my dad walked into newsagency and came out with this as a present for me. I haven't read it again since so maybe you should take my comments with a grain of child like salt. I still remember the book to this day, which to my mind (having read hundreds of books in between times), means it must have been a pretty good book :-)

Following on from Charlie Moon's ambition to become a detective at the end of first novel 'Here Come Charlie Moon', Shirley Hughes' sequel 'The Big Bonanza Bust Up' sees Charlie and cousin Ariadne return, this time to foil a gang of rather hapless burglars in their local library. Still entertaining and again accompanied by Hughes' own trademark illustrations, perhaps this reuses the original novel's formula of Charlie as the underdog hero who comes out on top at the end slightly too predictably and the novelty of the original is lost. Too many of the original novel's most entertaining characters, such as Auntie Jean and Mrs Cadwallader, do not feature and their replacements, such as Duggie Bubbles the entertainer, aren't quite so three-dimensional or endearing. However, it's nevertheless an under-read adventure with many twists and turns along the way, likely to give children, particularly boys who find reading less naturally attractive, an edge-of-the-seat page-turner they're unlikely to want to put down.
