Good book to introduce writing styles in different cultures and different themes. A few controversial poems- dont know if they could be used today, but if they can, good teaching points.

Within this book are twenty-three poems. They focus particularly on West Indian Children, talking about everyday topics that children will recognise. John Agard achieves this through humour and warmth of personality. The language used within each poem is simple. In some of the poems, there is a small use of Guyanese creole such as yuh, nuh and deh. Also, a lot of repetition and rhythm is used throughout the poems including I din do nuttin, I din do nuttin, I did do nuttin to communicate meaning and emphasise the verse. This text is supported with illustrations throughout. Within this short poem, a boy named Dilroy receives a birthday card. Aimed at under sevens, John Agard smoothly opens up the gentle areas of identity and race through a cheerful Happy birthday Dilroy! This can appear to be very simple and some children may not look further beyond this however, John Agard does this in a way that young readers can think about the situation if they are alert to the issue and ignore if they are not ready. Agard skilfully uses the tension between the two illustrations effectively to highlight the cultural divide the poem is emphasising when Dilroy considers the image on his birthday card.
