Exceptionally well-written travelogue describing the search for the Kreen-Akrore, the last Amazonian tribe hiding from Portuguese-speaking Brazilians in the Xingu River region. The various tribes are viewed by the British documentarian author as a bit like unruly children from the Grapes of Wrath, but there's a fair degree of objectivity overall, and a healthy dose of disdain for the Brazilian government's Lusophone-centric policy of relocation and containment of its native tribes.

A late 1960s expedition to find an Amazon tribe which has had no contact with civilization. With conservation and protection being of lesser concern to the Brazilian Government than politics and profiteering, this is a true life adventure story full of excitement and sadness, told with empathy from the documentary-makers perspective. The irony of white men seeking out an uncorrupted jungle people to protect their ancient way of life, from the white man, is not lost on the author. But the truly heroic work he records being done for the Amazon peoples by the Villas-Bas brothers in their belief that the western world is destroying so much potential through its own greed is at the heart of this very real survival race. Well written and full of drama it is a pity we did not pay more attention back then.
