Review # 1 was written on 2012-04-07 00:00:00 Karen Buchanan One of the four Septimus books; this one has the typical complex plot, strongly realised setting and interesting characters. Policeman-turned-intelligence officer-turned policeman-turned parson Septimus Treloar joins forces with the dean's young son to investigate an apparent haunting in the minster. There's a lot of trap-laying, running in the dark and a reporter in the coke hole. All good fun. The Septimus books are unusual in that they were published for children and yet the main character is an adult - youngish in the fourth retrospective book, but late-middle-aged in the others. There's nothing to mark them as "children's" any more than there would be in any cosy mystery. First of the crossovers? Or does that honour go to Victorian novels which were meant for the whole family?
