Coffee table books: who buys them? I ask you. I got this moderately amusing coffee table book from the library, and, as I suspected when I leafed through the soon-to-be-remaindered copies at the local book emporium, it is never more moderately amusing than its moderately amusing title, except maybe for the "Where's Waldo at an Orgy" two-page spread (dirty!), which is, at the very least, fitfully amusing.

Well here it is; a book so sexy that it has the word 'sex' in the title three times. Now that's gotta be sexy! Well it is, sort of. What this book actually is, is a look at sex from all angles (no laughing please). Authors Kristen Schaal and Rich Blomquist have put together the latest compendium of all things sex in a style somewhat reminiscent of the old Spy magazine or National Lampoon books (or even Jon Stewart's latest works). A veritable hodge-podge of information, essays, charts and parodies covering the ins and outs (did we just say that) of sex throughout the ages. Topics here include sex through the ages (A Brief History of Sex in chart form), a Sex Hall of Fame (from Casanova to Hef), tips, tricks and tools of the trade, as well as more personal pursuits for every orientation imaginable. There is also a section on the future of sex, for those that don't want to be left out of the before, after and afterer life. (their words - not ours). While certainly comical and well laid out (or is it layed? We never know.), The Sexy Book of Sexy Sex is about as clever and over-the-top as one could imagine on this subject. If that was not clear to the reader by the end, it should be by the time you get to the acknowledgment section, where the authors have made such a mess that they have to apologize to their families and closest friends. That's when you know a book is worth it.

I thought it would be sexier. And I hoped it would be funnier. Reading this in bed at night, I did not keep my husband awake with any loud guffaws. Nor did I keep him awake with any untoward advances. Sigh. The book is certainly not a complete waste of time. There are a few gems scattered among the pages, and the "Where's Wildo" puzzle was a blast. Plus, you gotta admire any gal who dares to pose on the cover of her book wearing granny panties and tube socks.

Not as funny as Colbert's I Am America and so Can You but funnier than anything by Rush Limbaugh, The Sexy Book of Sexy Sex* is an encyclopedia of all the things you want to do in the bedroom but know you probably shouldn't since it was, after all, written as a joke. *Not recommended for readers in the middle of a serious and depressing break up. DEFINITELY recommended for couples, singles, polys, readers going through an un-serious breakup, virgins, liberal grandmas, and gazellemos.
