I'm apparently just completely unable to figure out what the big deal is, with Rahner. My conspiracy theory is that a post-Hegelian Kantian philosopher lost a bet and had to disguise himself as a Jesuit priest for 40 years, writing banal milquetoast 'theology' under duress. Does anyone out there actually like this guy? I've read a lot of theology and I feel like he's vaguely talked about more than actually cited (people mention the "Anonymous Christian" thing but not much else; and the distinction between the economic/immanent Trinity far predates Rahner). I mean, no matter what you think of the exact positions of Bulgakov, Von Balthasar, Barth, Congar, and the other big names of the 20th century, you at least have to admit that they're brilliant thinkers; with Rahner, I'm just not seeing it.

I obviously didn't read all of this in just a few short days. I skimmed some. Read deeply a little. Mainly, I got a better idea of the importance of Rahner. I will likely come back to works similar to this one by Rahner. I found a lot of this one difficult to read. But it isn't one cohesive work. It's basically a bunch of essays. His notes on Christology, Barth and poetry are obviously significant. I will attempt a deeper reading of other Rahner books that are a little easier on the senses until I am more familiar and learned. He has many theological conversations and I wasn't always sure of what people had said and what the historical arguments were. This was a library book and I am just trying to get a big sampling of differing voices which aren't 'Evangelical.' I find we get too comfortable within our own lanes, when we have so much to learn from others who think different than us.
