Review # 1 was written on 2015-01-26 00:00:00 John Macmillan The most dreaded words a storyteller can find in a folktale collection: "I have adapted these tales to make them suitable for children." *shudder* One has to work really hard to make Mayan mythology child compatible. Whatever. Some of the tales in this book I found very entertaining. I don't usually find more than one or two in any collection that I would really like to tell on stage, so the fact that I found two in this one says it was worth reading. However, I made sure to track down Carter's sources and take a look at the original stories that she adapted from. Brownie points for making my job easier and including a list of sources. There are not many Central American folktale collections easily available. |
