SPSS was the bane of my life for the two years I struggled through at uni. I would recommend this over the Andy Field book which will just make your head explode, this is written in a much easier to follow (and understand) style but unfortunately it wasn't simple enough for me and I still struggled immensely with SPSS!

This book was basically understandable, but nothing special. It explains how to run various statistical tests in SPSS, but the explanations of what the tests ARE or WHY you might want to use them are tricky for someone with a minimal statistics background.
