Review # 1 was written on 2014-07-18 00:00:00 Ira Belfer Reynolds responds to one of the most common criticisms of Cather's work - that it is removed and ahistorical - by linking her best novels to the contemporary issues they explored. Sometimes one wishes these readings were more thorough or that more historical sources were used in the process, but on the whole the effort is quite successful in 'opening up' Cather. |
Review # 2 was written on 2009-03-29 00:00:00 Kenneth Vaughan You go in knowing the essentials: orphan from an early age struggles with identity and searches for birth parents. You go through the first 4 chapters feeling like a juror who wonders why charges were ever brought. He reports his adoptive parents' unwillingness to reveal his history but he never appears to really confront them and demand the information--that would have made the first part of the book attain some kind of traction. By the time I finished the book I was mostly sorry I ever started. |
