Review # 1 was written on 2014-11-05 00:00:00 Maritn Neumann I wasn't familiar with most of the writers in this collection beyond knowing their names. I've read Ellen Wood's East Lynne but nothing else by her; I've read one Charlotte Yonge, I've read Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret and Aurora Floyd, and one of Juliana Horatia Ewing's short stories is in a collection of fairy stories I bought for Fiona, but the rest of the authors I haven't read. Also featured: Mary Howitt, Eliza Meteyard, Jessie Fothergill, Louisa Molesworth, and Rhoda Broughton. Well written collection of essays that has the bonus of introducing me to a couple of texts that mention Ouida which I've not encountered before! The essay on Ellen Wood cites Malcom Elwin's Victorian Wallflowers chapter on her but not how much of a ding-ding he is about her in that chapter. Ah, the serendipity of research. LOL |
