Review # 2 was written on 2014-02-20 00:00:00 Matt Tranovich A fine and extremely readable introduction to medieval France. Most of the first half of the book describes the various levels of French society during this era, and is followed with a narrative political history. The emphasis is on power relationships and the various struggles within and between factions, especially the Church and the armored aristocracy. The reigns of the various kings is also covered, as are the many differences between northern and southern parts of the country. A person who intends to seriously study the development of the French state needs to start with the Middle Ages and this work is an excellent place to start. |
