There's something to be said for an author who dates modernity as beginning sometime around the beginning of the Tudor dynasty. This book was originally published in 1928 and, so, originally represents the viewpoint of an English historian after what they thought of as "the great war." It was revised in 1938, just before the beginning of an ever greater war--not a pretty prospect. It is of interest, then, particularly in its later chapters, for just this perspective. Otherwise, this is a substantial introduction to the history of England which holds up to modern reading. The emphasis is, as characteristic of the time, political, but Lunt does throw in some cultural and intellectual history as well. I read it as a review of stuff I really hadn't studied since college, not in any survey sense, and got what I wanted out of it.
