Review # 1 was written on 2013-03-28 00:00:00 Michael Demarco Reboot was a charming, intensely plot-heavy cartoon that stood out as being one of the first fully CGI-animated TV shows in Canada. Ostensibly for kids, the show often addressed adult themes of death, coming of age, violence, family, responsibility and much more. The character designs were often intricate, with the (then) primitive CGI renders often belying the effort that went into making them on the drawing boards. Skimming through this art book I was reminded of the things that made me enjoy the show as much as I did - the creative and very memorable character designs, the gorgeous background sets, the expansive architecture of Mainframe and its buildings and the otherworldly environments of the Web and its inhabitants to name a few. And at the same time I was reminded of the many indicators of how unprogressive the showrunners and writers were - oversexualized women and crude racial and cultural stereotypes being the main offenders. They say it's hard to separate the art from the artist. I'd add that it's even harder to separate the artwork from the art.

Review # 2 was written on 2014-07-09 00:00:00 Jedi Vm I liked this book, but it's a bit thin. It would have been nice to see more behind-the-scenes prototypes beyond just the basics. For instance, they mention that Hack and Slash had legs, but we don't get to see that drawing. But all things considered it's a nice little book. Why hasn't ReBoot been turned into a movie? That mystifies me.
