Review # 1 was written on 2014-06-11 00:00:00 Simpson Steven I read this book while also taking a course on International Law, and so I really enjoyed seeing the real life applicability of some of the theory we've been reading. Like much of international human rights law, indigenous issues still seem mostly aspirational. And this book plays into that framework by emphasizing the value and applicability of the international law framework, whether through customary international law or through actual regional human rights cases. The evidence does point towards increasing applicability and relevance of international legal frameworks in supporting and developing indigenous rights issues, but this book seemed to me to brush over some of the problems that still exist in state reticence and the dominance of state-centric politics. A good and important read, but nonetheless aspirational.
