Three Cool Kids is a take on the fairy tale The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The characters remain billy goats but have quite distinct different personalities. The littlest goat loves his red tennis shoes. The middle goat, the sister of the group, loves her jingly silver bracelets. And the oldest goat is a bossy-pants brother that's very protective of his younger siblings. The three of them live in the city, versus the countryside as in the original fairy tale, and need to move land lots once they've eaten all of the grass and weeds that covered theirs. They are afraid to cross the street, though, because they have heard tales about a huge sewer rat that eats any animal who tries to do so. Eventually, like all other Billy Goats Gruff stories, they defeat the antagonist and get safely across the street to their new plot. I did not like this version of the story very much because I wasn't a fan of the goats' personalities. I suppose I also don't much like the idea of city goats. It was nicely illustrated, though, using a collage technique that gave the book a very urban vibe- which is very apropos. (Fractured Fairy Tale)

The Cool Kids is another adaptation of Three Billy Goats Gruff. This version takes place in a city, on a lot, where three cool kids (goats): Big, Middle, and Little live. The grass and weeds in their lot were becoming thin and there was some noisy construction taking place so they sought to move to a vacant lot which was located across the street and down the block. Rather then crossing a bridge they cross a sewer grate and rather than encountering a goat they encounter a rat. The rat threatens to eat each goat as they pass and each goat tells the rat that the next sibling is going to tell him "what's what." Eventually it is Big's turn to cross, he encounters the rat. Big charges the grate with his horns and stomps it with his hooves causing the rat to fall back down into the sewer. The goats make it across the street where the grass was certainly sweeter. I like the up to date location of the story and the fact that the illustrations were done with torn paper. I did not like the premise of a rat eating a goat, it is very implausible.
