Review # 1 was written on 2014-11-16 00:00:00 Joseph Rosenberg This was a good and easy read. She may be a shill for ETS, but I found it convincing (though I agreed with much of it before I read it). Her argument is that the SAT, ACT, LSAT, GRE, etc., are benign and give good predictions (though just a small amount) of students' future performance. I thought she gave a fairly balanced history of the testing, validity of tests, and answers to disparities in different groups. I read a very critical review in The Nation. I was not convinced by it. Some people seem to like to hate on the SAT. It is not great, but it is better than any other tool (besides previous GPA, and it does provide extra predictive power when used in combination). Should everyone go to college? Then don't have the SAT. Should colleges try to persuade those who will not be successful (and waste a ton of money and time) away? I think the SAT/ACT is a good tool. If I was a college admissions God, I would make students take 5 APs and compare their results with their SAT scores. |
Review # 2 was written on 2015-04-17 00:00:00 Rick Cohen This book started off really well with some great ideas for how to get ideas flowing. I like the exercises and did try to do them as the book suggested. However, I am no longer a student and so the latter half of the book about how to do assignments and write essays lost my interest. Not a criticism: I'm not the target audience. |
