Review # 1 was written on 2008-06-11 00:00:00 Diane Costa Stephen looks at various aspects of Christmas through the eyes of philosophy. He discusses the ethics of lying about gifts you didn't like, the morality of eating turkey, kitsch Christmas sentimentality pitfalls, is peace-on-earth a good idea, and so on. If you collect Christmas books, or you're really into philosophical debates, you might like this book. At the time I bought this, I was a Christmas book collector. I no longer collect Christmas books, and would probably not buy this now. Borrow from the library ... maybe, buy ... no. One of the books in my daughter's Christmas collection. 3 Stars = It was 'okay'.

Review # 2 was written on 2020-12-01 00:00:00 Marie-Line Pelletier I stumbled upon this book in a little charity bookshop just before Christmas. "Jingle bells" in the air, gingerbread lattes promoted at Starbucks closeby, the Christmassy atmosphere and the intriguing idea made me go for it and buy it but I wouldn't buy it again. The book presents an interesting perspective on philosophy, taking relatable problems regarding Christmastime and analysing them from a philosophical viewpoint. It's a decent introduction to some of the hottest philosophical topics, such as the existence of God, violence, and theories like psychological egoism. However, beyond the initial ideas and a few good chapters, the book is mediocre. Law's dispersive and often gets too "technical" without properly leading the reader to the points he wants to make or the ideas he wants to introduce. Moreover, his opinion is very much felt, to the point that philosophers who don't agree with him are not adequately presented in his book.
