The rest is an immense waste of time, an exercise in rewriting Montaigne in the vein of Leo Strauss, but with far less perspicuity and erudition. Until you realize the terrible state of Anglo Saxon scholarship on the subject, it is amazing how a writer as fundamentally Machiavellian as Montaigne can be so wildly misinterpreted, but even by that dreadful standard this is wretched. This belongs to the Montaigne: Secret Protestant school of misinterpretation. I read this book 7 years ago and had basically forgotten it, but like Jim Steinman's song it is all coming back to me now. |
