John Edward Weems presents the Mexican-American War in great detail. Understanding of this war is essential to understanding the history of the western United States from Oregon to Texas. This war featured such notables as Robert E. Lee , Ulysses Grant, John C.Fremont , Zachary Taylor and Santa Ana. The war was cruel and bloody and it cast President James Polk his health. Comment: This book is for readers who love to read about American history. This is a book written in 1974, so check the shelves of your public library. Your library may also have a more recent book on this war published in 2017 that I have yet to read. The title is the Dead March: A History of the Mexican-American War by Peter Guardino

This is an interesting analysis of the Nullification Crisis of 1832-33, but it is written in a rather dry academic style that makes it slow going. I particularly liked Ellis' discussion of how nullification (the idea that any state, based on its sovereignty, may nullify - or refuse to acknowledge - any law passed by the federal government) fits in with various theories of states' rights. He also points out how the convergence of nullification and states' rights theories with efforts to justify slavery helped bring on the Civil War.
