This was the first Yarbro vampire book that I read. I thought it was so good that I checked down the others, including ones that were out of print. The novel is good and accurate historical fiction set during the time of the three mustketeers. The d'Artagnan of the title is the historical d'Artagnan upon who Dumas based his own character. The book succeds because of the absolute life and charm of its main character, Atta Olivia Clemens, who is one of the most enchanting and living fictional characters ever created. The woman breathes. The main plot concerns politics while a sub-plot concerns the role of women, in fact, the role of "common" women in the society of the time. What makes the Clemens series stand out is how we see the position of women change and not change as Olivia travels though history.

This was a awesome story about Olivia. I was very happy that she found someone to love until the day she died the true death. I was sad that it had to end. I wanted her to find Saint Germain and just be friends and see each other. But of course that doesn't happen and it made me sad that she never saw him again. Spolier alert!!!!! The man that was trying to kill her I think he found her there in Roma and that is who killed her. The last letter with Saint Germain to Niklos says that they believe there was a explosion that took the floor and the heater down and crushed her. Then says they found a eldery man on the side of the road dead that had a limp. That had to be Nino. Who else could it be. End of spolier...... If you love Saint Germain then you will love this book as well as the other two about Olivia just as much. Keep Reading!
