Review # 1 was written on 2018-02-22 00:00:00 Grant Marshall Short story collections always seem to involve several pieces you love, several pieces you dislike, and a selection of others falling at different places along the spectrum. This collection is no different and, while I admit to skimming the second half of a few of the pieces that failed to capture my attention, it is also home to what immediately became My Favourite Short Story Ever: "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. What a powerful masterpiece of layered metaphor that is! I want to force everyone in the world to read it, and I have already started this process with my wife and my mother ;p |
Review # 2 was written on 2021-03-27 00:00:00 Christiaan Starrenburg An exceptional collection of short stories (largely from the Victorian period), all about changing perceptions of womanhood and reevaluating women's place in society. All the stories are thought-provoking and insightful. I rediscovered some familiar favourites (Edith Wharton, Virginia Woolf, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Katherine Mansfield), and encountered some fascinating, lesser-known authors. The variety in style, voice and ideas covered would make it an excellent collection to write an essay about. I found much enjoyment in it and I'm sure I will revisit it in the future. Favourite story: A Cross Line by George Egerton |
