Review # 1 was written on 2013-02-22 00:00:00 Jennifer Musselman I've lived in Belgium about a year, in the city of Leuven, a city of which this author has a particular fondness. The first third of the book is fascinating, the second third an absolute slog, and the final third regains interest. As for that middle third, it's hard to tell if it was the author's prose style, or the events themselves, but Belgium history got quite dull for a period of a few hundred years, and despite the book's relative short length, my momentum died, and it took considerable focus to power through and get to the more interesting aspects of the 20th century. In terms of pure facts, I'd recommend this book well enough, but the author is not a great story teller. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-02-13 00:00:00 J. A. Wittreich, Jr. It's a little hard to follow, up until WW1, then it gets very clear and very helpful. My favorite of the three histories of Belgium I've read. |
