Dismisses completely the inheritance of acquired traits, and is therefore dated. Epigenetics has shown Lamarck to have been right, just a bit.

This book was written in 1995, which I think is significant because it was before global climate change was really politically significant. Dominion is the story of how humans and their forebears interact with their environment, and how our species has stepped out of local ecosystems to become an influence on the earth globally. It is written from the unique and interesting perspective of an evolutionary biologist. Despite its deeply scientific basis, I found it layman-friendly and an engaging read. The title of the book comes from Genesis: "have dominion over the beasts of the field". Eldredge makes the argument that if our species is to survive long term, we will need to change the stories we tell ourselves, and acknowledge our reliance and influence on the global ecosystem. Definitely worth a read.
