(NOTE: This is based on the condensed Finnish translation, which omits large portions of the book) Sean MacBride's life is a remarkable tale of an Irish boy caught in anti-imperialist struggle against the British Crown, who eventually ends up becoming a renowned London-based diplomat, peacemaker and internationalist - and of course a co-founder of Amnesty International. These stories are important for our time, since Amnesty has been there in many important junctions of European and world events, standing as a voice of reason against the madness of the Cold War on both sides. The brutality of right-wing and left-wing dictatorships, the torture and disappearance of prisoners, the rampant breaches of human rights, the war against freedom of the press... These are important struggles, the gravity of which is only made apparent by the realization how far we've come in only a century, towards enlightenment and open democracy - and yet how much work there is to be done, as the world descends, again and again, into chaos, war, tyranny and treachery. The book is filled with anecdotes of different time periods and different continents: ordinary people and politicians, murderous tyrants and courageous citizens, diplomats and businessmen. African warlords offering dinner parties to erstwhile IRA activists. Luxembourg cafés hosting the birth of an international peace and disarmament movement. Secret meetings where wars are decided. I believe the only way the world is changed through the tireless work of ordinary citizens working in all strata of society. The battle for the future of humanity is NOT a battle of good people over bad people, but a battle of good ideas over bad ideas and good practices over bad practices. To learn more about good ideas and good practices, and people who make good things happen, read this book.

Honestly, I didn't read all of it, but I read most of it. Very good.
