The biblical story of the prodigal son gets a retelling set in the mid-19th-century Dorset. In this particular case, the prodigal son is a classical villain that has no limits to reach his objectives. After asking his share of the inheritance, Charles Carnow departs from his home leaving behind total chaos but, clever as he is, he is able to shed the blame of this havoc to other innocent man. Ten years after and after he squandered his money, he returns to his father's home bearing in his mind another nasty plans in order to refill his pockets. But this time, he will meet his match. What I love more about Caroline Stickland is that she is able to describe the characters, settings, the english seasons in such descriptive fashion that you feel that you are witnessing in loco what is happening. I also love its dialogues especially the jibes between Charles and Ettie. I read some reviews comparing Caroline Stickland to Thomas Hardy and I have to agree. For me it was a pleasure to read this novel which happens to be the third from Caroline Stickland I read. Highly recommended.

Bizarre, with somewhat worrisome morals and confusing religious undertones. Valentine looks just like the Virgin Mary, but she is a young Jewish girl, and she has a crush on her awkward English teacher…. The one part that really tickled me was when Valentine discovers that Mary and Jesus were Jewish--before the advent of Christianity. What a marvelous revelation for her!
