Review # 1 was written on 2018-03-20 00:00:00 Richard Welch I've read all the Gus Maltravers books up to this. The reason being that Gus and his actress girlfriend, Tess, are very likeable characters. Another plus is they do not always put their own lives in peril to work out a case like so many other characters from different novels. In this story a past starlet who went missing years back and was never heard of for years, suddenly returns to London causing a bit of media flurry. She has re-emerged after about 20 years of being...who knows where. Gus is thrilled to be chosen to interview her as his younger self had a real crush on her. He does some digging in her past and finds out she was - 20 odd years ago - at a party where someone died. Not long after this she disappeared. But she is particularly anxious to avoid any questions about either event. Then an editor Gus knows dies in a nasty accident - or was it? Strangely she too had been at that party of long ago. Gus digs further with no real idea of any connection, no proof, just gut feeling. When he finally joins the dots it's a race against time to stop a murder. Good fun, nice central characters, and suitably nasty side ones.

Review # 2 was written on 2020-04-20 00:00:00 Doug Burnett Good mystery! This book was enthralling and had me hooked after the first few sentences. The protagonist was not a policeman but a reporter. This was the first Augustus Maltravers 's mystery I've read, and I am looking forward to reading more. I highly recommend this book to other mystery readers.
