Nelson, M.R. (2008). Encyclopedia of sports in American: A history from foot races to extreme sports. Westport, CT: Greenwood Press. Citation by: Jenni O'Guin Type of Reference: Encyclopedia Call Number: Ref 796 Content/Scope: This 690 page two volume encyclopedia is of the overview of sports in American culture. Suitable for high school age and up. Accuracy/Authority/Bias: Greenwood Publishing is a division of ABC-CLIO, which has over 50 years of publishing experience. Arrangement/Presentation: Arrangement is chronological. Each chapter gives a historical context of the time period and then covers major trends for that period and ends with suggested resources. Index is at the end of volume 2. Relation to other works: This would be a great bridge between resources that give only the history of America and those that are strictly sports encyclopedias. It is a good mixture of the two. Accessibility/Diversity: A timeline and many photographs will help the visual learner. Cost: $175.00 Professional Review: Kosokoff, J. Booklist online. Retrieved from

Formative and well-written with a clear focus on what Atlantic History should be about, and with a wealth of topics and examples to weigh historical examination on matters of culture, trade, and social standing.
