Review # 1 was written on 2016-11-13 00:00:00 Thomas Chapin Un libro che affronta in modo chiaro e comprensibile anche ai non esperti un tema delicato e importante: i rischi legati alle radiazioni. Che siano dovute a centrali nucleari o a emissioni naturali (radon) quali sono le conseguenze per la nostra salute? Il libro spiega in maniera semplici i vari modelli proposti per rispondere a questa domanda. E alla fine fa emergere un'inquietante verità: i rischi legati alle radiazioni "a piccole dosi" non sono quantificabili con certezza proprio perchè sono praticamente insignificanti. Meglio sarebbe concentrarsi su altri fattori che possono provocare malattie come tumori e leucemie, quali ad esempio il fumo o la dieta. Eppure ogni giorno vengono spesi molti soldi per ridurre di frazioni irrisorie rischi che sono praticamente inesistenti, mentre continuiamo a morire avvelenati dall'aria che respiriamo o dalla nostra sregolatezza. E continuiamo ad avere paura dell'energia atomica in modo irrazionale, quando anche casi straordinari come Chenobyl hanno fatto molti meno danni alla nostra salute del classico "pacchetto al giorno".

I was told to read this by a colleague, but the authors are so convinced of the rightness of their own position (that much modern medical treatment is futile'essentially, though I know this from other writings of theirs rather than getting far enough into this book, because they think people lacking cortical function from brain damage or severe illness no longer count as people) and dismissive bordering on mocking of anyone who disagrees with them (especially attacking religious people, of whom I am one) that I couldn't handle more than the introduction and one chapter.
