Review # 1 was written on 2008-01-17 00:00:00 Andrew Krejsa I found this book simplistic in its central claim that really all cosmetic surgery boils down to is our wish to resemble celebrities. But not only the work was simplistic, ironically at the same time it was also all over the place. The various arguments and observations Blum makes in different chapters are often contradictory, which is okay as long as you then discuss these contradictions and make some sense of them, but she didn't do that. I also felt that the study was heavily coloured by the author's own bad experience of being talked into doing cosmetic surgery by her mother in her youth. That seems to have affected her so that even though Blum is an academic researcher she never appears to be objective about her material.

Review # 2 was written on 2012-01-09 00:00:00 Chrisss Ruummzz Not going to lie, I read this because this quarantine has fucked up my self-esteem big time and I needed confirmation that I wasn't going insane, that all this time alone cooped up at home with nothing but the internet and celebrities' faces staring at me from the tv for company was truly ruining my self-perception. Usually I spend a decent amount of time outside walking amongst mere mortals, which helps offset the unattainable beauty standards presented by the media, but, you know. Covid-19 happened. Turns out I was right, and this book sums up all the ways in which I suspected 2d images affect us very nicely. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to stare at my reflection in the mirror to try and convince myself that beauty is not the price I owe for existing.
