This book while at times funny, and heartwarming is basically a tragedy brought about by the author's stupidity and ignorance. She killed her pet, and while it was dying, she was already planing to bring in its replacement. I have no idea why this book was published. It is also full of wrong, and dangerous information. It is NOT a good example of how to raise or live with a parrot, especially a macaw.

this is a quick read. i read it in about two hours. but it's actually quite funny and touching, in addition to be cute (an undependable word at best), and i defy anyone who reads it to not immediately desire a macaw companion of their own. on second thought, that's a stupid thing to say. if you are an animal lover and extremely patient, maybe. if you are in possession of a few masochistic tendencies, more likely. otherwise this is the stuff of nightmares: a super-intelligent, two-foot tall, four-foot wide (wings extended) carnivorous menace with the ability to not only hurl your worst curses back at you, but also to shriek with ear-splitting volume upon the slightest provocation? not to mention the beak that, when not busy with shrieking, could snap off a tasty finger or two in a jiffy? where can i sign up! in all seriousness, i think this would be the perfect pet for me, being the nearest thing i could have to a dinosaur of my own. anyway. the book is less about a parrot who thinks she is a dog than about a crazy (in the best way) woman who adopts an abused macaw who was born wild, captured and brought to the states to live in a cage ostensibly for the rest of her potentially-long life. oh, and in the process she lost a foot, was beaten by the woman who would breed her with a macaw she apparently hated, and did i mention?- was confined to a cage after having flown free in her native jungles. so here comes our buddy Crazy McCuckoo and adopts this wounded bird who, in addition to being terribly broken spiritually and otherwise and therefore untouchable and intractable, thinks she is god. hijinks ensue as the author learns to live with her sinisterly chuckling winged dictator, and sarah actually comes to accept good ol' Crazy as her mate/personal valet. not to give anything away, but i am compelled to admit that i totally teared up at the end. totally heart-warming animal-lover fare, without the seemingly inevitable maudlin-ness of other similar books (ana quindlen, i'm talking to you).
