An enjoyable and helpful memoir of Col. Rick Francona, who was a liaison with the Iraqi military at the end of the Iran-Iraq War and in the interregnum period before the Gulf War. He was then an Air Force officer on the CENTCOM staff and an interpreter for Schwarzkopf, including at the Safwan talks. Needless to say, he was at the heart of the action, and for anyone studying Gulf-War era Iraq policy and military history, this is a must. Francona is a funny and insightful narrator who highlights many of the absurdities and tragedies of this conflict (and of Saudi society, which he came to know intimately). I'll definitely find several places in my early dissertation chapters where this book will be illuminating.

Love the photos of the women as they look now. Lots of character.
