Review # 1 was written on 2011-01-26 00:00:00 Michael Craig I found this book in my shelf recently, after I'd bought it to support my MBA studies and thought I'd give it a closer look. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It contains a collection of recent research papers and articles around Strategic HRM, and more widely current topics of general management. After reading quite a bit, I actually think the title could have chosen differently in order to attract more readers. It starts with a general introduction of Strategic Human Resource Management, and related theoretical frameworks, and how it fits with general business strategy (at its core). I found the paper on Change Management particularly interesting, as it lays out 2 contrary views on change management, reflecting on the same experiences and feelings I had being part of big change programmes. I was a bit disappointed though at the conclusion which was rather short after quite a lengthy analysis. I might refer to the actual book/article which was shortened for this book. The book also contains several papers critically reviewing current thinking and (often not-so-good) practices of performance-related pay and performance management in general. I'll probably add more comments on papers as I continue. So far, it is a really good experience - quite easy to read, and an interesting collection of topics. I would recommended this book to anyone involved in managing human resources, i.e. most general managers. It allows readers to review current trends in management (based on scientific research), and critically reflect their own beliefs and practices.
