Review # 1 was written on 2012-09-14 00:00:00 Steven White What a great book. It's much better than I read in the other reviews. I actually read a very old edition of this book from the sixties. It's a hard-cover in green. The print was very small and hard to read. I enjoyed it for several reasons, one being that this was my late Aunts book. I've had it in my possession since the eighties by I just got around to reading it now. She was a professional student of Russian in college, getting a masters degree in the countries history. The book itself was packed with information gained first and second hand by the author, Sir Barnard Pares in the time of World War I. It seemed like an intensely personal accounting of events leading to the fall of the Romanov Dynasty drawing not only on Pares own experiences but also personal letters of many of the involved parties including the Emperor and Empress. I was actually excited by the pace of the story toward the end and eagerly anticipated the climax. |
Review # 2 was written on 2017-05-27 00:00:00 Michael Cronin Absorbing reading - the author was personally in contact with many of the key persona, and has an informed assessment of many of the others. He gives a fine history of the events that led to the reign of the last Tsar, and how things developed in his reign. More than that, he reveals the thinking of the main characters at the crisis era that followed the beginning of WWI. The roles played by the three main actors in the downfall - Rasputin, the Empress and the Tsar - are explained and illustrated from the royal and political diaries and witness testimonies. |
