SPOILER ALERT: Near the end, we learn that Rosenfeld's mythic demise in a cramped apartment without natural light was just that--a myth, part of the legend of his passing. In fact, recently before his passing, he'd moved into an "airy," larger apartment, and he was even driving a used but "sporty" red convertible around the time he died suddenly of a heart attack at 38. In 2018, because we can become so familiar with so many writers at various stages of success or failure, it's important to note that by a contemporary scorecard, Rosenfeld's writing life was an amazing success. He published in prestigious journals, where no doubt many other contemporary writers wished they could, and he had fiction published by someone other than himself or his mother. Go over to twitter today and see if nine out of ten writers tweeting their book news aren't actually self-published or carried by a good friend. If you're interested in Bellow, Kazin, Rahv, or others from the time and place, you'll likely enjoy this book.

Oh dear. I'm well into the book, and I have learned 1) more about Zipperstein than Rosenfeld and 2) that Zipperstein's effusive gratitude to his copy editor for her great work is undeserved. I will let you know what I think about his (Steven's) second marriage in a later update.
