Teaching Music Globally is a kind of introductory volume to Bonnie Wade's Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture series--a series I really enjoy. This volume by Patricia Shehan Campbell is aimed at general school music teachers (K-12) rather than at people teaching ethnomusicology at the tertiary level. The writing style is meant to be inviting and simple to understand, and throughout the book, Shehan demonstrates her fluency in music education trends and concerns. Much of the book is suggested exercises and activities a teacher might do with young students, giving them experience in performing different musics and learning about the surrounding contexts. Though I'm teaching at the undergrad and grad level, I still found some useful ideas here--in particular, her idea of "Sound Awareness" activities at the beginning of class, to get students into that day's concepts, is great, and I'm using it in my teaching right now. Because Campbell and I did our doctoral studies at the same university, I naturally resonate with her perspective on teaching and learning. I was especially glad for her final chapter, which reads as a manifesto for teaching musics of the world along with their sociocultural contexts, at all levels of education. I also loved her encouragement to foster the integration of multiple arts into the curriculum (pp. 210ff.). Breaking down the silos between the arts'which many in the West now tend to regard almost as commonsense givens'is definitely needed. This holistic, integrative approach (and the freedom that comes with it) was missing from much of my education, and I hope that we can foster a better situation from this point on. I recommend Teaching Music Globally to any music teacher who has the desire and freedom to reconsider what school music classes have to be. Extensive experience in many music traditions around the world is not required to benefit from this book.

How a segment of hippie rock intellectuals (in this case, the man who might have been the first rock critic) viewed the scene in 1967-68, when each release seemed to be advancing the youth movement: Loved the Byrds, Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Beach Boys and the Doors, had no use for the Beatles. Idealistic, woolly-headed, charming.
