Review # 1 was written on 2011-11-06 00:00:00 Charles Wheeler This spate of poor reading material forced me to pillage the stacks in my local library for something better. In the process I discovered a beautifully designed and researched coffee-table book on Toronto architecture Tom Cruickshank and John de Visser's Old Toronto Homes (Toronto: Firefly Books, 2003). Although I am not sure how I didn't discover it while searching for books on Toronto architecture online, it is a pleasant reminder that libraries are sometimes best discovered in person. Books, are after all, physical objects and sometimes one needs simply to browse the stacks for something exciting. The book is a collection of de Visser's beautiful photographs of beautiful Toronto homes, accompanied by a brief history and architectural commentary by Cruickshank. Savouring such beautifully crafted books allows me to appreciate local architecture I had taken for granted and to see details in a way I had not previously understood. Cruickshank's architectural knowledge and his brief sketches of the houses and Toronto neighbourhoods allows readers to develop their own architectural vocabulary. |
