This had an appealing premise, but I can't go any higher than 3 stars. The characters were well developed, with the writing being almost too contemplative for me at times. While I stuck it out to the end to see whodidit (no surprise), truth is, I just didn't care about any of the characters. Lars was particularly self-serving and narcissistic, and wife Emma ridiculously sedate. I thought I might care about Iris, but nope. So Iris dies, Lars is threatened, and I just didn't feel much reaction one way or the other.

Although I read this book several years ago, its gossamer eerieness stays with me. If you like thrillers set in New England college towns, this is definitely for you. The writing is elegant and the storyline intricate, and it captivates from beginning to end.
