A beautiful, moving, and interesting book. Kris describes his aim, more or less, as operationalizing the main concepts of psychoanalysis in terms of free association. Since this concept is common to all varieties of psychoanalysis, it can provide a common currency in which to compare these varieties impartially (something he does not attempt to do here). He also, as he himself admits, does not quite operationalize the main concepts, but rather discusses their relations to free association so as to give as experience-near an understanding of them as possible. Many of his discussions involve reference to cases, which he describes in a humane and fascinating way. Never have descriptions of other people's experiences in psychoanalysis had such an immediate and compelling effect on me. Not for everyone, I fear, because it is sometimes a little obscure and frequently much too condensed and brief; but highly recommended for those willing to tolerate these difficulties.

As a graduate student gnawing at the bit to master psychoanalytic "technique", I found Kris's brief condensations on free association inspiring. The clinical method described in the book is wonderfully direct, and therein attractive to novice learners bumbling around for direction with this type of therapeutic treatment. However, I'm left wanting more on the method and process. Kris's brief and succinct writing has made the book a quick, accessible, and valuable read. But, as an eager psychoanalytically-oriented clinician, I am left wanting more. I highly recommend this read for unfamiliar, up-and-coming clinicians curious about free association in relation to psychoanalytic treatment!
