Review # 1 was written on 2017-03-04 00:00:00 Wheaton Illinois Thorough, convincing, and well-written, this volume makes a strong case that paternalistic, romanticized views of slavery are simply incompatible with the reality of a large and pervasive trade in enslaved persons which necessitated the breaking and disregard of familial and social bonds, and represented a constant threat in their daily lives. Although this reality is frequently portrayed in the testimony of formerly enslaved people, their testimonies have often been disregarded when they conflict with the self-serving accounts of their masters. Those seeking dramatic stories will probably find it dry, but anyone who wants to move beyond anecdote into data-driven history will find much to value. |
