Although this reality is frequently portrayed in the testimony of formerly enslaved people, their testimonies have often been disregarded when they conflict with the self-serving accounts of their masters. Those seeking dramatic stories will probably find it dry, but anyone who wants to move beyond anecdote into data-driven history will find much to value.
