Review # 1 was written on 2019-03-16 00:00:00 Joyce Hoinski This book consists almost entirely of photographs documenting the process of creating The Spirit of Haida Gwaii with a description of the artwork by the artist himself, and a brief forward putting the work into context. The photographer was really able to capture the creative process from start to finish and I absolutely loved seeing the behind-the-scenes action. I also appreciated that the other artists who helped Reid create this piece were credited in this book. As a whole, the book was informative and focused on providing context for this one artwork in particular out of Reid's career, and it left me desperate to see the work in person. The photographs were very well done and gave almost a sense of intimacy to the book. There was an opportunity for more story-telling to be done, especially if the author had included information about The Jade Canoe's partner The Black Canoe (which was, in fact, the original of the two). More information about the characters in the canoe would also have made for a better read. Would recommend to people interested in The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, or maybe even as an introduction to Haida art.
