Review # 1 was written on 2014-06-04 00:00:00 Ron Mcpheron First 1/3: 4 stars. Second 1/3: 3 stars. Final 1/3: 2 stars. The old time stuff w John Montgomery Ward was really interesting and the first couple chapters well researched. But after the Kenesaw Mountain Landis era, Lowenfish's writing gets lazier and he's less able to marshal facts to tell a comprehensive narrative; he starts skipping things and lobbing in random facts (I had to look up the disapperance of Judge Crater, no context before or after.) Finally, do you think a book that ends in 1990 with "hopefully baseball labor relations will get better with Fay Vincent and Donald Fehr" and "drugs aren't a serious problem except to Peter Ueberroth" has aged well? It has not. To be clear, I don't have the Bison Books edition, so if someone has insight into the afterward that talks about the strike and the 90's-2000's steroid crisis, please share. 2 other random tidbits in support of the above: * The prologue on the Messersmith-McNally arbitration case was so clearly chopped out of the main text because the editor wanted a prologue; fine, but there's now a gaping hole in your narrative where the mid 70's used to be. * Did you know that Marvin Miller had nothing to do with Lee Moffett getting canned 11 months into the job? No, really! He was just a consultant! Who just wanted to use the players association office once! Nothing to do with it at all! What, he was named the acting Union head once Moffett was fired? Pure coincidence! That's the level of scrutiny that Lowenfish applies to parts of the narrative. Other characters practically have Darth Vader music playing over their quotations. You want to tell me what I should think? Fine. But I remember reading a quote somewhere at the beginning of this covid-19 pandemic that I will misquote and likely misattribute to Bill James: Baseball now is a machine designed to suck as much money as possible from the fans: players and owners are colluding to operate the hose.

Review # 2 was written on 2010-12-21 00:00:00 Regina Walsh Excelente libro para entender un poco la historia de la iglesia Católica. El libro no habla de los 267 papas que ha tenido la iglesia católica hasta la fecha, únicamente habla de 52 de ellos. De los 52 papas seleccionados para el libro, se mencionan características como "fecha en la que fue seleccionado", "Fecha en la que falleció", "ciudad de origen", "Edad", etc. Además se mencionan problemas políticos de ese periodo de tiempo, su relación con el emperador, problemática por la que pasaba el mundo y problemática por la que pasaba la iglesia. La lectura me pareció un poco pesada, con mucha información en muy pocas palabras y en algunas veces asumiendo que se tenía conocimiento de hechos muy específicos de la historia. A su vez, es impresionante cómo se obtuvo toda esta información para compilarla en el libro, lo que me llevaba a dudar si era un buen libro o simplemente un libro mas. Lo que me hace dejarlo con solamente 4 estrellas, es que el autor se enfocó mucho en hablar de la situación histórica, y lo malo del papa, pero nunca mencionó lo bueno que hacía cada uno. Por ejemplo, menciona que le dispararon a Juan Pablo II, pero no menciona que fue el Pontícife a perdonar a quien le había disparado (que es una de las razones por las que muchas personas lo consideraban santo desde antes de su canonización). A su vez, no menciona el papa Pio X u otros famososo por lo bueno que aportaron, pero si menciona cada uno de los involucrados con Las Cruzadas y con la Inquisición. Excelente libro para tener una buena referencia sobre la historia de la iglesia Católica, pero debe ser leído sabiendo que muchos detalles positivos de cada papa fueron omitidos.
