"A life is like a pebble dropped into a pool, surrounded by a series of concentric circles radiating out to the horizon...the first ring is family...the next ring is work...the next circle, community...the next ring is society...the next ring is planet Earth. These necessary rings are each full of consuming passions, and passions that consume. One could live within any one of them for a lifetime." - Lenfestey, James. The French word for alone is sul. To hear it pronounced appropriately, you have to appreciate the emotional content of such a short, powerful word. If you don't know what being dropped into the deep end of a pool feels like, in order to learn how to swim, you may not understand Lenfestey's metaphor either.
