Review # 1 was written on 2013-09-02 00:00:00 Rud Ferd This is one of those books that makes me remember why I love Latin American politics. The fundamental argument is that a desire for international legitimacy underscored all of Pinochet's actions and decisions in power. He includes a number of domestic variables, and international ones, to account for shifts over time. I found the use of junta meeting minutes compelling as a source of what the junta was actually considering as important. Also, I'm biased towards finding international legitimacy/law/human rights concerns important because that's what I'm studying, but it's still always nice to read a well thought out book that argues that very point. |
