This is one of those books that makes me remember why I love Latin American politics. The fundamental argument is that a desire for international legitimacy underscored all of Pinochet's actions and decisions in power. He includes a number of domestic variables, and international ones, to account for shifts over time. I found the use of junta meeting minutes compelling as a source of what the junta was actually considering as important. Also, I'm biased towards finding international legitimacy/law/human rights concerns important because that's what I'm studying, but it's still always nice to read a well thought out book that argues that very point.

really excellent historical and cultural overview of chile's northern desert region and its role in politics and memory. highly recommend reading; this book will be of real value to me in my research not only for this project, but potentially for my thesis as well (tangentially).
